After a sinus lift

These are general instructions. If your surgeon told you something different, follow your surgeon.

For two weeks — to protect the sinus

  • Do not blow your nose forcefully.
  • If you need to sneeze, sneeze with your mouth open.
  • Do not drink through a straw, and do not smoke cigarettes or hookah.
  • Avoid flying, diving, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting.
  • Take decongestants and antibiotics exactly as prescribed.

This is normal

  • A light nosebleed in the first day or two
  • Swelling and bruising of the cheek, sometimes under the eye
  • A blocked-nose feeling for a few days

Call the clinic straight away if

  • Bleeding that does not stop after an hour of pressure on gauze
  • A temperature above 38°C
  • Swelling that keeps increasing after the third day
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing — go to the emergency department
  • Graft particles coming out of the nose
  • Air or liquid passing between the mouth and the nose
  • Sinus pain or foul-smelling nasal discharge with a fever
