WhatsApp appointment reminders: cutting no-shows in a dental clinic
If you lose three appointments a month to no-shows at 50,000 IQD each, that's 1.5 million dinars a year — more than a clinic management system costs annually. Automatic WhatsApp reminders solve that one problem on their own.
Why WhatsApp and not SMS
In Iraq and Kurdistan, WhatsApp has effectively replaced SMS. Patients often don't open a text message, but WhatsApp appears on their lock screen and gets read immediately. They can also reply or confirm the appointment right there.
Meta's 24-hour rule — what most clinics don't know
WhatsApp doesn't let you message a patient whenever you like. If the patient hasn't messaged you in the last 24 hours, you can only send an approved template — text you submitted to Meta in advance and had approved.
This matters because an appointment reminder always falls outside that window. If software claims to do WhatsApp reminders but has no approved templates, those reminders reach nobody — and worse, the system may report them as sent.
Ask this when buying: "Do you have approved Meta templates? How many? And who registers them — you or me?"
Beyond reminders
- Recall campaigns: find patients who haven't been back in six months and message them. Usually a clinic's most profitable campaign.
- Post-visit feedback: ask a day later how they're doing. You get both feedback and Google reviews.
- Online booking: patients book from WhatsApp without tying up reception.
